🧬  Transcode videos

Your videos are automatically optimized for optimal playback on different devices. 🤓

To provide trainees with the best viewing experience, Warp Studio creates different video formats for all supported devices. Our transcoder uses a quality based variable bitrate (QVBR) algorithm that dynamically varies the bitrate to maintain a constant quality level. We've configured the quality level at 9 out of 10, where 10 is considered near lossless. 💎

📱  Smartphone and tablet

For smartphone and tablet we use two variations: normal (2K) and high (4K). We don’t support stereoscopic videos on these devices. Due to the required extra decoding resources, most mobile devices or tablets do not support stereoscopic without reducing quality too much. 🥲

  • Normal: H.264 - 1920 x 960 pixels (2K)
  • High: H.264 - 3840 x 1920 pixels (4K)

🤿  VR headsets

In VR we can use either 5K monoscopic or 4K stereoscopic display, depending on the video you upload.

Monoscopic videos show the same video for both eyes. Stereoscopic videos show a slightly different video for each eye to create a more 3D like experience. This especially helps with playing on dedicated VR headsets such as the Oculus Quest 2 or Pico G2 4K.

  • Monoscopic: H.265 - 5120 x 2560 pixels (5K)
  • Stereoscopic: H.265 - 3840 x 3840 pixels (4K)

⚠️  We do not upscale your videos. If you upload a 4K video, we do not create a 5K video.

⚙️  Recommended transcoding settings for 360˚ videos

Warp Studio supports monoscopic and stereoscopic 360˚ videos with stereo audio.

➡️  Monoscopic 360˚ video

  • Resolution: at least 3840 x 1920 pixels, preferred 5120 x 2560 pixels
  • Frame rate: at least 25 fps, preferred 30 fps
  • Container: MP4
  • Codec: H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC)
  • Bit rate: variable bit rate (VBR), at least 150 Mbps
  • Audio: codec: AAC, stereo, sample rate 48, bit rate 320

➡️  Stereoscopic 360˚ video

  • Resolution: at least 3840 x 3840 pixels, preferred 5120 x 5120 pixels (top/bottom format)
  • Frame rate: at least 25 fps, preferred 30 fps
  • Container: MP4
  • Codec: H.264 or H.265
  • Bit rate: variable bit rate (VBR), at least 150 Mbps
  • Audio: codec: AAC, stereo, sample rate 48, bit rate 320

You can upload higher resolution videos to Warp Studio. However, it will downscale 🔻 these to a maximum of 5120 x 2560 pixels or 5120 x 5120 pixels. When you record your videos in 8K, you can save time rendering, uploading and transcoding by using our recommendations as stated above.

➡️ Other accepted specs

  • Dimensions: no limit, aspect ratio must be 2x1 for monoscopic or 2x2 for stereoscopic
  • Frame rate: no limit
  • Container: MP4
  • Codec: H.264, H.265
  • Bit rate: no limit

➡️  Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro has some great presets ready to use. Navigate to the export settings and select Format: H.264 and Preset: Match Source - Adaptive High Bitrate. This should match your source video automatically.

Also, check in the Video tab whether the Video is VR field is marked and if the Frame Layout matches your source video. That’s it. You can start rendering! 🎇

📼  Can't export to MP4?

If you are unable to export your video files to MP4 and have no other transcoding software to use, we recommend to use the open source video transcoder Handbrake. See the article Export to MP4 for more information.
